Pitt shocked by post-Katrina devastation

NEW ORLEANS - After two days of getting his first up-close look at post-Katrina New Orleans,
Brad Pitt said Friday he was shocked at the devastation that remains almost a year later.

"I was not prepared," the actor said, describing how he drove for miles and saw street after street of devastation.

Pitt was in New Orleans to give an update on a project he's promoting — a competition to choose ecologically sound designs for rebuilding neighborhoods.

"There's a big opportunity here," he said, to rebuild the city using energy-efficient building materials and appliances that would improve quality of life, particularly in low-income communities.

Global Green USA, a national environmental organization, is working with Pitt on the design project. Pitt heads a jury of architects, city residents and others who decided Friday on the top five environmentally friendly designs out of more than 100 entries. The designs were submitted by individuals and architect firms.

He admits the new designs, which use energy-saving materials such as metal roofing and recycled textiles, might not reflect the historic architecture often found in New Orleans. But, he said, it's time to look to the future.

"It's impossible to replicate the past," Pitt said. "The original designs are really good. They're really efficient." But, he added, "we can do better."

Design project finalists are to be announced Monday.

Global Green USA is also providing technical assistance in green standards for 10,000 buildings in New Orleans. It opened a resource center in the city last month to give residents free design advice and information about environmentally friendly building products and strategies.

Pitt was not asked about his girlfriend or their three children. Personal questions were put off limits by a publicist for Global Green who said the news conference would be ended if such questions were asked.

"It wouldn't have ended it. It just wouldn't have been a question that we would have answered," Global Green communications director Ruben Aronin said later.

LOS ANGELES - "Pirates of the Caribbean" is looking more like "Treasure Island." Already a record-shattering blockbuster,
Johnny Depp's sequel "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" dug up $62.2 million in its second weekend, raising its 10-day total to $258.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The movie has quickly become the year's top-grossing film, rocketing past "X-Men: The Last Stand," which has taken in $232 million in eight weeks. The "Pirates" sequel has grossed an additional $125 million overseas.

"It's really fun when you're riding a comet like this," said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney, which based the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies on its theme park attraction. "This thing is just unbelievable. It creates its own wake."

Sony's "Little Man," the Wayans brothers' slapstick farce about a pint-size thief masquerading as a baby, opened as the No. 2 movie with $21.7 million. The tale stars Shawn and

Hollywood's business dipped for the first time in two months. After eight straight weekends of rising revenues, overall receipts totaled $156 million, down 5 percent from the same weekend last year, when Depp also was at the top of the box office with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Still, the second weekend gross for "Dead Man's Chest" topped the debut of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," which opened with $56.2 million. "Dead Man's Chest" had the third-best second weekend ever, behind "Shrek 2" ($72.2 million) and "Spider-Man" ($71.4 million).

By next weekend, "Dead Man's Chest" should climb past the $305 million domestic total rung up by its predecessor, 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," Disney's Viane said.

"Dead Man's Chest" debuted with $135.6 million over the opening weekend, beating the previous record of $114.8 million set by "Spider-Man" in 2002.

Richards Restrains Sheen a Little Bit Longer

Estranged spouses Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards agreed to an extension of a court-approved restraining order Thursday, barring the TV star from independently contacting or coming within 300 feet of his wife or the couple's two daughters. Sheen retains his right to one supervised visit per week with the children.

The extension came in lieu of a custody hearing originally scheduled to take place this week to determine which custody arrangement would best for two-year-old Sam and one-year-old Lola.

Sheen has requested joint custody of the girls, while Richards, who filed a lengthy declaration in April alleging her husband was verbally and physically abusive, and has been hooked on prescription drugs, pornography and gambling, sought sole custody.

Sheen denied the claims in a declaration of his own, calling them "false allegations" and accusing his wife of engaging in a "smear campaign."

Thursday's hearing has been postponed until Sept. 12,at which point Richards and Sheen are expected to come face to face. Up until now, the actors' lawyers have been duking it out in court on behalf of their clients.

"I can't say for sure, but there's a strong likelihood," Richards' lawyer, Neal R. Hersh, told City News Service of the possibility of the boldfaced names appearing in court this fall.

In the meantime, the extended restraining order will be kept in effect for just a month longer, until Aug. 14.

At that time, both sides will appear in court to argue over which questions will be fair game during the estranged duo's upcoming depositions. Their respective current love interests, rocker
Richie Sambora and real estate investor-actress Brooke Mueller, will probably be off-limits, with queries most likely focused on the events that transpired while the former fun couple was cohabitating.

Richards, 35, originally filed for divorce in March 2005, at which point she requested sole custody. After a counter-filing from Sheen, 40, the duo briefly reconciled in the fall, only to have Richards announce plans to move forward with the proceedings in January.

The postponed court date is just the latest development in the publicly played-out drama.

Both have moved on romantically, though Richards apparently at the cost of her relationship with former friend and Sambora ex,
Heather Locklear, the Wild Things star has put more literal distance between herself and her estranged hubby.

Last month, Richards put the home she bought during her initial split from Sheen in Los Angeles' Westlake Village on the market for $4.3 million. One big selling point: The abode was virtually next door to the home Sambora and Locklear used to share.

As for Sheen, he's finally become the recipient of inarguably good news.

The actor received his first ever Emmy nomination for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, with the popular but previously unlauded CBS sitcom going on to score a total of seven nominations.

Britney Spears "Dumbfounded" by "Pro-Life" Sculpture Opposing Abortion

In her first public comments about a supposedly pro-life sculpture of her naked and bearing a child, pop star Britney Spears says she is shocked by it. Normally the one doing the shocking at her concerts and in the headlines, the sculpture of Spears debuted at a local New York art gallery in late March.

The life-size sculpture depicts a naked, pregnant Spears as she is about to give birth to her new baby, Sean Preston. She is crouching down on a rug and holding on to a wolf's face as the baby's head appears from her uterus.

Spears says she was "dumbfounded" when she found out about the sculpture and saw the national controversy and press it generated. She also said she thought the idea was hilarious and not a serious attempt to display the beauty of birth.

"I think it's the most hysterical thing I've ever seen in my life," she told WENN. "My assistant and I were totally dumbfounded when we saw it. We couldn't believe somebody actually did this."

Spears said she had no interest in purchasing the sculpture for her Malibu, California home.

"No thanks. They can display it somewhere, but not in my beautiful home," she said.

At its unveiling, Connecticut artisan Daniel Edwards called his work am "image of birth" and says it is a "new take" on the pro-life perspective.

"Pro-lifers normally promote bloody images of abortion," he told AP of his work.

The sculpture has been featured at the Capla Kesting Fine Art gallery in Brooklyn and has appeared next to a case with pro-life materials. The exhibit, titled "Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston" has already drew over 3,000 emails from people on both sides of the abortion debate both it was unveiled.

Gallery co-owner David Kesting told AP, "We also got calls from Tokyo, England, France. Some people are upset that Britney is being used for this subject matter."

"Others who are pro-life thought this was degrading to their movement. And some pro-choice people were upset that this is a pro-life monument," he added.

The Manhattan Right to Life Committee provided the materials to be on display, but its president, Jeanne Head, is distancing herself from the sculpture now that she's seen the piece.

"At best, it's in poor taste. At worst, it's offensive," she told the New York Sun.

She indicated Edwards approached her about the exhibit but only said the sculpture would depict a woman giving birth. He did not provide further details.

"He did not tell me it was Britney Spears. He did not tell me it was depicting her in that strange position," Head added.

Edwards is the father of three children and his statute comes six months after Spears gave birth to Preston. He said he did not get the pop diva's permission and used photographs of her to make the sculpture.

He told the Associated Press his goal is to create debate about a topic that "is greater than the issues presented by either pro-life and pro-choice advocates."

When AP asked him if he is pro-life, he replied, "You nailed me. I'm not saying that I am. I wouldn't march with either pro-life or pro-choice advocates. This is not meant to be political."

Edwards said he is a Democrat and doesn't "judge anybody for the decision they make."

The free exhibit opened April 7 and ran for two weeks.

Keira will start appearing in ads next year, and is taking over for Kate Moss whose contract expired last October and has been starring in their ads since 2002. Keira said in a statement:

I'm hoping Keira follows in Kate Moss' footsteps and turns to a life of cocaine addiciton. I've always been curious as to what cocaine can do to a girl who looks like she already uses cocaine. Maybe she'll get so skinny her breasts will actually invert. Then she can use her chest like a little bowl and store stuff in there. Like fruit or something.

The hunky 'Troy' star, who was once dubbed 'the sexiest man alive' has hit rock bottom by having been named on a list of the 100 Unsexiest Men in the World.

The 42-year old actor - who has dazzled audiences with his good looks in Hollywood hits like 'Fight Club' and 'Legends of the Fall' - has made the shameful list because of bad hygiene rumours.

The unflattering poll, which also includes Jerry Seinfeld, 'Tonight Show' presenter Jay Leno and Osama Bin Laden, is topped by the US comedian Gilbert Gottfried.

Britney Spear's hubby Kevin Federline also managed to make the gruesome list coming in at number 99 - one spot ahead of Pitt.

The 'Tomb Raider' star, who is currently pregnant with boyfriend Brad Pitt's child, is buying Richard Branson's man-made version of Ethiopia, located in Dubai.

The British business tycoon is having 300 country-shaped luxury island developments built, to form a map of the world.

And the 55-year-old entrepreneur is selling parts of the 'world' to anyone rich enough to afford them.

The 30-year-old actress, who is due to give birth early in May, is reportedly planning to turn her new purchase into a fair-trade paradise for hundreds of Africans.

A source said: "Angelina has been obsessed with Ethiopia ever since she adopted her second child Zahara from there. Her friends are very jealous of her purchase."
